PPS 1
RESEARCH & INNOVATION IN BIOREFINERIES FOR AVIATION BIOFUELS FROM AUTOTROPHIC MICROALGAE
HTL
Hydrothermal Liquefaction
HTL is an innovative thermochemical process that converts raw materials with a high moisture content, such as lignocellulosic material and aquatic biomass, into bio-oil and value-added chemicals.

PPS1 GOALS
The main goal of PPS1 is the implementing of a production process for aviation biofuel from microalgae, using thermochemical conversions. A study has been carried out on the applicability of the hydrothermal liquefaction process (HTL) to microalgae and the development of the most suitable process for upgrading the bio-oil produced, so that it can be used as aviation fuel.
HTL : Why?
Water is the only solvent - simple to use, relatively low cost.
Suitable process for wet biomass - no biomass drying required.
Usually performed at moderate temperatures.
BIO-OIL PRODUCED IN THE HTL PROCESS HAS CHARACTERISTICS NOT SUITABLE FOR ITS DIRECT USE AS A FUEL, AS SUCH IT IS NECESSARY TO PROCEED WITH UPGRADING .
THE CATALYTIC HYDRODEOXYGENATION (HDO) PROCESS HAS BEEN CONSIDERED THE MOST PROMISING PROCESS FOR IMPROVING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS PRODUCT WITH A VIEW TO ITS USE IN TRANSPORTATION.
STEPS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED
1. Pilot Scale Biomass Production Tests
2. Laboratory Studies of HTL and HDO, Including the Development of New Catalysts
3. Construction and Testing of Prototypes for Demonstration
4. Characterization and Evaluation of Aviation Biofuel Conformity Tests (Including Testing Tests on Engines
5. Life cycle as well as technical-economic evaluation of the process at the scale of demonstration.
