PPS 2
RESEARCH & INNOVATION IN BIOREFINERIES FOR AVIATION BIOFUELS BY HETEROTROPHIC FERMENTATION USING RESIDUAL BIOMASSES OF LIGNOCELLULOSIC NATURE
MOVE2LOWC
PPS2 GOALS
Implementation of an industrial production process for aviation biofuels from microbial oils produced by heterotrophic fermentation of hydrolysates from residual lignocellulosic biomass of forest nature, using HEFA technology.
HEFA TECHNOLOGY
Hydroprocessing of vegetable oils into aliphatic hydrocarbons
The main obstacle to large-scale production of biofuels using HEFA technology lies in the lack of sustainability of the raw material: vegetable oils that compete with the food market.
The alternative – the use of residual oils – in addition to having important contaminations that require costly purification, they also lack sustainability due to their residual nature (low availability).
Innovative Characteristics
Development of a new technological solution for the production of aviation biofuels, which:
-
Be fully sustainable as they do not compete with raw materials for food and are carbon neutral;
-
They can be produced on a large scale by industry through the use of abundant residual raw materials – forest and agricultural residues and other organic biomass fractions, such as solid urban residues;
-
Meet the requirements of alternative aviation fuel standards (ASTM D7566 and D1655; annexes 1-6).
STEPS TO BE ACCOMPLISHED
1. Obtaining hydrolysates from lignocellulosic biomass
2. Selection of Non-Conventional Yeasts and Optimization of the Fermentation Process for Lipid Production
3. Conversion of these Microbial Lipids into Aviation Biofuels by Catalytic Conversion
4. Life Cycle Assessment; Technical-Economic Analysis of the Demonstration Scale Process.
